Basic Life Support with AED

Aim: An introduction and update in knowledge and skills of the u/se of the AED Adult BLS and following the current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines,
Duration: 3 hours with 20 minute break
Structure: Interactive theoretical session, and facilitated practical session
Ratio: 1 instructor to 8 candidates

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the individual role and responsibilities in responding to persons in emergency situations
  • Be able to recognise cardiorespiratory arrest
  • Know how to recognise and respond to patients with clinical deterioration,
  • Update and reflect on the Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines for Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Provide basic airway management
  • Operation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) safely and appropriately
  • Professional and legal responsibilities
  • Review Chain of Survival
  • Shockable rhythms
  • Understand the principles of defibrillation
  • Familiarisation using an AED
  • Practise using airway adjuncts, pocket mask and bag-valve-mask
  • Practice BLS scenarios with an AED and a manikin
  • Continuous assessment for competence
